RIP Sugar Minott

The legendary Jamaican reggae singer, producer and soundsystem operator Sugar Minott sadly passed away earlier this month leaving behind a veritable legacy of artists and recordings in his wake. Minott died on the 10th of July 2010 at the University Hospital of the West Indies in St. Andrew's Parish, Jamaica after being admitted there earlier that day.

Sugar Minott has always been one of the sweetest names in reggae and has done much to propel the scene forward, nurturing and giving public exposure to many talented up and coming stars such as Ranking Joe, Captain Sinbad and Ranking Dread through his Youth Promotion organisation. His Black Roots label featured productions of these artists plus others such as Tenor Saw, Little John, Barrington Levy and Horace Andy.

This is a huge blow for the reggae community and he will be sorely missed. Nonetheless, Sugar Minott's musical legacy lives on and is sure to keep the people dem dancing.

New Guy Blog is offering some free tunes for download in honour of his 41 year career. Make sure you check out his discography on Discogs and listen good, seen.
